What to do in Case of a Dental Emergency
Time is of the essence when it comes to sudden dental problems. It’s beneficial to add emergency dental items to your first aid kit. Save-a-Tooth is a solution and container that helps preserve your tooth in case it is ever knocked out. Cotton, tweezers, gauze, temporary dental cement, and clove oil for pain relief are also suggested for a complete first-aid kit to protect against dental emergencies.
Knocked out tooth must receive treatment quickly for any chance of successfully replanting it. Call to let us know you are coming, so we can prepare for your arrival. Locate the tooth and place it back into the socket if possible, or use the save-a-tooth solution if you have it. If these options are not available, place the tooth in milk or lightly salted water.
Get to our office as soon as possible, and, if for any reason we can’t see you in that time, we will direct you to the closest emergency room.
A severe toothache is often caused by an infection. Always keep up with your routine dental appointments to avoid these kinds of dental emergencies. If you have mild dental pain, make an appointment to be seen soon, if not on the same day. We will take the necessary steps to prevent your minor toothache from becoming worse and requiring more complex treatment.
You can use over-the-counter topical pain reliever or acetaminophen to reduce discomfort until you make it to our office.
An abscess is a true emergency. If you are in pain and can feel tiny bumps on the gums underneath the tooth, call our office immediately for the next available appointment.
A broken tooth or restoration can be repaired at our dental office. Whether it is a true emergency depends on your level of pain. Use temporary dental cement to hold the broken piece in place, or put in a container with Save-a-Tooth solution or milk.
