What to Do When Dental Emergencies Happen?

Listed below are some dental emergencies you might encounter, possible causes, and ways to deal with the situation until you are seen in the dental practice:

Toothache or Pain

Continued tooth pain can be a sign of damage or infection to your teeth. If you are in pain, you might have an untreated cavity or decay may have reached the innermost portion of the tooth. It is imperative that you schedule an emergency appointment, so we can help you determine the problem and help you relieve it along with a treatment plan to restore your dental health.

Follow these steps until you see the dentist:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water to help get rid of any debris that irritates the area.
  • Gently floss and brush your teeth while being mindful of sensitive areas.
  • For severe pain that is too hard to manage, take Tylenol or another type of pain relief.

If an injury results in the tooth shifting sideways, or a bit to the outside, or further to the inside of its socket, call our office for urgent dental care. Dr. Goldberg will help reposition your tooth with a splint. A few days following the injury, you might need a root canal treatment to save your tooth.

Apply an ice pack to help minimize pain and swelling until the dentist sees you and inspects your tooth.

If a tooth is knocked out completely, how you are helped depends on how long it took to see a professional. Immediate action is required in this situation. Seeing our dentists in the first few hours can help increase the possibility of reattaching your avulsed tooth. Here is what you can do when this happens:

  • Handle the knocked-out tooth with care, if dirty rinse it in cold water, do not use soap.
  • Preserve your tooth in saliva, warm milk, or lightly salted water until you see the dentist.
  • If you are bleeding, apply pressure and an ice pack until the bleeding stops.

You may chip a tooth if you accidentally fall or while trying to open or chew something hard. If the chipped area is large enough to allow bacteria to enter the dental chamber, it could cause further damage if left untreated. During your emergency appointment, our team can create your crown on the same day to help seal the chipped area and prevent further damage happening to your teeth.

Rinse the area with cold water. If the chipped area of your tooth is bothering you, you can cover it with dental cement to keep it from cutting your lips. Dental cement can be bought over the shelf at any of the local pharmacies.
